How to Choose a Good Accountant for Your Small Business

So you’ve started a business, and you want to find an accountant - it’s one of the first big decisions you’ll make as a business owner, and it’s really important. The right accountant can help you stay compliant with the rules, avoid mistakes that will cost you money, and hopefully take a lot of the stress out of running your business.

Here are a few simple things to look for.

In this article

Check if they're qualified

Make sure they're a registered tax agent and keep up to date with tax law changes and ATO requirements. Tax rules change regularly, so ongoing training matters.

Find someone who understands your industry

Running a cafe is very different from running a construction business. An accountant who already works with businesses like yours will understand the common challenges, deductions, and compliance requirements that are specific to the industry you operate in.

Whether you're a tradie, consultant, online seller, or contractor, industry experience can save a lot of time and confusion.

Consider location

Many accountants work remotely these days, but it can still be helpful to have someone local. Ultimately, it’s a relationship, and sometimes it’s easier to sit down face-to-face with someone to discuss important decisions or ask questions - especially if you're new to business.

Consider the size of the firm

Bigger isn't always better.

Large accounting firms often have more resources, but small business clients may not always receive the same level of attention as larger clients. Smaller or boutique firms can often provide more personalised support and guidance.

This doesn't mean large firms are the wrong choice. It's about finding the right fit.

Understand how they communicate

Everyone works differently. Find out:

  • How quickly they respond
  • Whether you'll have a dedicated contact person
  • What documents they'll need from you
  • How they prefer to communicate/share information

You want an accountant who suits your communication style and working rhythm. Some people prefer quick emails, others prefer calls or check-ins.

It also helps to choose someone who is proactive. A good accountant who doesn’t just respond when you ask, but actually thinks about your business in the background. Ideally, they should be flagging things when a tax rule changes or when something relevant affects your situation, rather than waiting for you to ask.

A good working relationship starts with clear expectations on both sides.

Get a written quote

Before signing up, ask for a written quote that clearly explains:

  • What's included
  • What's not included
  • Any additional fees

This helps avoid surprises later.

Final thoughts

The best accountant isn't always the cheapest. It's the one who understands your business, your goals and your relationships, communicates well, and gives you confidence that your tax and compliance obligations are under control. Take the time to find the right fit. Your future self will thank you.
